OfficeJet 4650. I've tried both the number on the back of the unit and the number on the screen and both are rejected. Windows 11 desktop.

Hi @esqasst,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

If you're encountering issues with entering the serial number for your HP OfficeJet 4650 on Windows 11 and it's being rejected, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Verify Serial Number

Correct Location: Ensure you are getting the serial number from the right location. The serial number is usually found:

  • On the back of the printer, on a label.
  • Inside the printer, usually on the cartridge access door.
  • In the printer settings menu (on the touchscreen) under Setup > Printer Maintenance > About.

Check for Typographical Errors: Ensure that you are entering the serial number correctly. Watch out for:

  • Misreading letters and numbers (e.g., "O" vs. "0" or "I" vs. "1").
  • Extra spaces or characters.

2. Update HP Smart or Printer Software

  1. Update HP Smart:
    • If you are using the HP Smart app, ensure it is up to date. You can check for updates in the Microsoft Store.
  2. Reinstall HP Smart:
    • If updating doesn’t work, uninstall the HP Smart app and then reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.

3. Use the HP Support Website

  1. Access Support:
    • Go to the HP Support website.
    • Enter your printer model (OfficeJet 4650) to access support resources.
    • Try using the Get Support option to see if you can find information regarding your issue.

Kindly check the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @esqasst,

Please find the next steps below.

4. Check for Windows Updates

  1. Windows Updates:
    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • Install any available updates, as these can sometimes fix compatibility issues.

5. Try a Different Computer

  1. Testing: If you have access to another computer, try entering the serial number there. This can help determine if the issue is specific to your current setup.

6. Printer Reset

If applicable, you can try resetting your printer to its factory settings, which may help resolve some software-related issues.

  1. Factory Reset:
    • On the printer, go to Setup > Tools > Restore Factory Defaults.
    • Confirm the action and wait for the printer to reset.

After performing these steps, you should have a better chance of resolving the serial number issue with your HP OfficeJet 4650. If problems persist, contact HP phone Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Thanks, Elohi. I've verified and re-verified the numbers I'm putting in, and even the law of averages tells me they'd have been right at least once. I've tried both zero and letter O as well since that can be hard to discern. The serial number on the back of the printer is different (shorter) than the one in Settings and I've tried both. I've updated everything I'm able to update. I can't get Support at all without a valid serial number, so I'm stuck here.

Thanks. We don't have the SmartFriend service so it's back to online support.

It would still be nice to have resolution on the serial number issue. In the meantime I'll post on the forum.

Ok, I know that it would be nice to have solved the seriial number issue, but that could probably take time.

Meanwhile you can try with the option from HP website to call support and ask for options to do registry
