For some reason when I try to print on paper size 5.5 x 4.25 (notepad size). I can not print.  The image is all the way on the left of the paper and it is cut off.  I have adjusted the settings from my computer for custom size and the try is adjusted on the printer.  please help 😞

Hi @katyn74 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Color LaserJet Pro M253-M254 Printer isn't aligning correctly when printing on 5.5 x 4.25 notepad-sized paper.

Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue on your Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan:

1. Ensure Correct Paper Size is Set on the Printer

  • Double-check that the paper tray is adjusted properly to the custom size you are using (5.5 x 4.25).
  • On the printer’s control panel, make sure the correct paper size is set for the tray. This is crucial because if the printer thinks it's printing on a different paper size, the alignment can be off.

2. Set Custom Paper Size in Print Settings (on Mac)

  • Open the document you want to print.
  • Go to File > Print.
  • In the Print window, click on the Show Details button (if it's not already expanded).
  • In the Paper Size drop-down menu, select Manage Custom Sizes.
  • Click the + icon to create a new custom paper size.
  • Set the width to 5.5 inches and the height to 4.25 inches (or vice versa, depending on portrait/landscape orientation).
  • Ensure the margins are set to 0 if you want to print edge-to-edge.
  • Click OK.

3. Adjust Scaling and Alignment in the Print Dialog

  • In the Print Dialog window, look for the Scale option and ensure it is set to 100% so that the image fits the page properly.
  • If your image is still off-center, try selecting Center on Page if that option is available in the print settings.

4. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Outdated drivers can sometimes cause misalignment issues with custom paper sizes.
  • Go to HP's support website and download the latest driver or firmware for your HP Color LaserJet Pro M253-M254 that is compatible with Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
  • Once updated, restart both the printer and your Mac, then try printing again.

5. Check for Application-Specific Print Settings

  • Sometimes the issue may stem from the application you're printing from. Check the print settings within that specific app (such as Word, Pages, or Preview) and ensure that the correct paper size and layout are selected.

6. Reset the Printing System on macOS

If the issue persists, you can try resetting the printing system:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click anywhere in the printer list and select Reset printing system.
  • After the reset, re-add your HP printer and try printing again.

7. Test with Another Document or PDF

Sometimes, specific documents might have layout issues. Try printing a simple test file, such as a PDF, to see if the problem is with the document formatting.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
