Hi @George414,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

  • Are you trying to use the printer's copy, fax, or scan features from the control panel, or are you trying to initiate a print job from your computer?
  • Is the printer properly connected to your computer (via USB or Wi-Fi), and is it recognized by your computer in Devices and Printers?
  • When you try to access the printer from your computer, do you encounter any error messages or does the printer respond to print jobs?

Meanwhile,

Restart the Printer and Computer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for 30 seconds, and then plug it back in.
  • Restart your computer to reset any temporary connectivity issues.

Reinstall the Printer Driver:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click your HP OfficeJet 5746, and select Remove device.
  • Download and reinstall the latest driver for your printer from the HP Support website, and ensure it's correctly installed.

Check Printer Connection:

  • Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or Wi-Fi.
  • Verify the connection in Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners (Windows) or System Preferences > Printers & Scanners (Mac).

Reset Printer Settings:

  • On the printer's control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance and select Restore to Factory Defaults.
  • This can reset the screen and allow you to access other functions like printing.

Create a Printer Shortcut on Desktop:

  • If the printer icon is not on the desktop, create a shortcut by going to Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer and select Create shortcut to place it on the desktop for easy access.

These steps should help resolve the issue with the home screen being stuck and the missing printer icon on your desktop.

Please mark this post as Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
