With a new HP Laserjet M209dw printer added to my HP Smart App on iOS/iPadOS, I can select a document to print, and change any of the settings from the printer dialog screen, but there is no option to set those updated settings as the new default settings. For example, default print quality is normal, and I can change it on the printer dialog screen to highest/best by moving it along the slider, but when I print again, it will be back at the normal level (default).
1) Can the default parameters be updated?
2) Even after manually changing the print quality on the print menu, I do not actually notice a difference between normal and highest/best quality in the printouts anyway. Do others users find that too?
3) In the HP Smart App, looking at this printer's settings, the "Quality Tools" indicate there are none. Do others find that too?
Thanks.

@Ontario1, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
The HP Smart app has limitations and does not work like a full-feature printer driver.
1. There is no option set the print settings as default.
2. Laserjet printers do not have an option to change the print quality. It is set automatically on the printer itself. Even the change you make on the app does not make a change in the print quality. This is printer model specific.
3. What tools are you referring to? You will find tools to clean the toner/drum, service and maintenance options in the app.
Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Hello Kumar0307 (HP Employee).
Thanks for your reply to my inquiry. It is appreciated. I am just trying to understand fully the capabilities of my new HP M209dw Laserjet Printer. Your answer is helping me in that. But if I may ask something further, to help clarify.
On the HP Canada website for this printer in the technical specifications it lists:
PRINT RESOLUTION
Print quality black (best) Up to 600 x 600 dpi
Print quality black (normal) 600 x 400 dpi, 600 x 600 dpi
When printing from an iPad, for instance, (with the latest version of the HP Smart App installed), the print dialog box that comes up when selecting something to print has an option under Media & Quality, Print Quality, which has a selector bar that has 3 levels to select Draft/Normal/Best.
Two questions:
1. In the Tech Specs for this printer on the HP Canada website, could you please explain why it has, under print resolution, "normal" and "best" values, and also, could you please explain why under "normal" it has two values (600x400 dpi, 600 x 600 dpi)? Is this something that the printer selects automatically, as you seemed to indicate in your answer?
2. Could you please explain why, when actually printing using this printer, there seems to be a Media & Quality, Print Quality choice that I can select? (Even though when I select it, I cannot notice a difference in actual output.) Could this dialog box be a function of the computer and not all the options it shows are functional for the actual printer? (It seems to have different selections for my HP Colour Laserjet and my HP B&W M209dw Laserjet, so it must know something about the printer when presenting the dialog box.)
Just for clarity with respect to my questions, my wife and I are quite satisfied with the output quality of our printer. It is also very fast, compact, and it looks good too. We continue to be happy HP customers. Your explanations above and, hopefully, in response to my follow-up here will just help me understand my printer functionality overall better.
Thanks,

I understand your concern. The print quality setting cannot be altered using Apple devices. However, you may try this on a Win PC and it will work.
Apple devices will automatically set the print quality.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Hello Kumar0307 (HP Employee). Thanks for your note.
In your reply to my inquiry you indicated that the settings were not able to be adjusted on Apple products. That is certainly not evident from the app or printer dialog menus etc. It would be handy for the HP Smart app to indicate this.
You also indicated the quality settings are adjustable on Windows machines. I have the printer installed on my Windows 11 Laptop and I have the HP Smart App installed. When I request for something to print from the laptop, it opens a printing dialog box with menu items. It has no Output Quality choices there, but it does have an item called: "More Settings". When I click on that it opens another dialog box (an HP Smart menu), which has a number of choices. One of the choices is Resolution and the pull down menu beside it has only one entry in it: "Max DPI Disabled". (This is the only entry under Resolution. It does not change no matter what I select (On or Off) for the main printing menu option: "Let the app change my printing preferences".
Also, on the Windows 11 HP Smart App, there are no adjustments for default settings or resolution quality that I can see.
Further, on the Apple Products, the HP M209dw seems to default to double-sided printing (but I can change an individual print job to single sided). On the Windows 11 laptop, it seems to default to single sided printing (but I can change an individual print job to double sided). I cannot seem to alter the defaults on either, but it is interesting that they are opposite.
Questions:
1) What does "Let the app change my printing preferences" do? [It is on the main printing pop-up dialog box on Windows 11 printing, but does not seem to make any changes to the menu options if I toggle it on or off.]
2) Why do I have a "Max DPI Disabled" as my only choice under resolution on the Windows 11 printing dialog menu?
3) Why would the HP Smart set up on Apple Products give a different default vs Windows Products for Single Sided vs Double Sided printing?
4) How can I change the default Double-Sided/Single-Sided Printing option so I don't have to select it one-way or the other each time on Apple/Windows?
Thanks. I appreciate your support.

@Ontario1
On a Win PC, install the printer using the full-feature printer driver.
Click here to download the HP Full-feature driver.
Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.
Now, you may change the print quality. To know how, refer to - HP print settings guide
1. The app will automatically make the changes necessary before printing.
2. To enable the Max DPI setting, use the full-feature printer driver.
3. This is as per the OS design. We cannot make changes to it.
4. You may set a preset before printing with the required setting as default. It depends on the app you are using to print. (HP Smart or full-feature printer driver. Also, Word, PDF, or Excel)
For more info, refer to - Print on both sides of the paper with an HP printer
Let me know how it goes.
