LaserJet 4240n
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello!

I swapped out a machine for a classroom and noticed that when I shut down the machine, it would turn back on.   The computer is a Dell AIO, and the printer is the LaserJet 4240n, connecting on USB.

I did turn off all power/usb related options short of disabling the port all together but the computer will continue to turn on by itself, only if the printer is off or USB is not connected that the computer can shut down and stay off.

Now where this printer is located is not close by a long shot (remote / 4hours away) and the users of the computer dont tend to follow instructions so our concern is that they would shut the machine down and then walk away, and then the computer is on for the entire time until it's used again (which is seldom)

I was wondering if this printer has any options that is making the computer turn back on?

Hi @CapMReynolds,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP LaserJet 4240n is a monochrome laser printer, and typically, printers don't have the ability to turn a computer on or off directly. However, there are a few possibilities that might be causing the issue you're experiencing.

Wake-on-LAN (WoL) Feature: Some computers have a Wake-on-LAN feature that allows them to be powered on remotely. Check the BIOS/UEFI settings of the Dell AIO to see if Wake-on-LAN is enabled. If it is, the computer might be receiving a signal to turn on over the network.

USB Power Settings: In some cases, the USB port might be configured to wake the computer. You can check and modify this setting in the Device Manager:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."
  • Locate the USB controllers section, right-click on the USB root hubs, and go to Properties.
  • In the Power Management tab, uncheck the option that allows the computer to turn off the device to save power.

Windows Power Options: Ensure that the power settings in Windows are configured correctly:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Select the power plan in use and click on "Change plan settings."
  • Click on "Change advanced power settings."
  • Look for "USB settings" and set "USB selective suspend setting" to Disabled.

Printer Driver/Software: Occasionally, printer drivers or related software may have features that interact with the computer's power settings. Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed, and check the printer software settings for any options related to power management.

Firmware Update: Check if there are any firmware updates available for both the Dell AIO and the HP LaserJet 4240n. Firmware updates may address compatibility issues and improve overall performance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
