Chrome OS

My HP deskjet all in one has been working well for 20 + years. Suddenly it is unreachable to my chromebook but working fine with old windows pc. I only use with usb cable and a couple of times it has printed when I have been pressing  everything on both printer and chromebook to try and find the problem. It can't be the usb cable as working with the windows but I want to print from my chromebook.  Why does it say printer is trying to print but unreachable. What  could suddenly have happened ? and how come it has worked a couple of times. Help much appreciated

@Jaffa4, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since your HP Deskjet 3520 works with your Windows PC via USB but not consistently with your Chromebook, we can narrow down the issue to something specific to the Chromebook or its interaction with the printer.

Re-add the Printer on Chromebook

  • Go to Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers
  • Remove the Deskjet 3520 if it’s listed.
  • Click Add Printer and wait for it to detect the USB printer.
  • If it doesn’t show up, click Add manually and enter:
    • Name: HP Deskjet 3520
    • Address: usb://HP/Deskjet%203520 (or similar, check exact name)
    • Protocol: IPP or USB
    • Use: Select “HP Deskjet 3520” or “Generic”

Enable USB Printer Access

  • Go to chrome://devices and check if the printer is listed.
  • If it’s listed under “Detected,” click “Connect.”
  • If not, try a different USB port or cable just to rule it out.

Reset the Printing System

  • Go to chrome://settings
  • Search for “Printing” and click Printers
  • Remove all printers and restart the Chromebook.
  • Reconnect the printer and try again.

Update Chromebook

  • Make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS.
  • Go to Settings > About Chrome OS > Check for updates

Try HP Print for Chrome Extension

  • Install the HP Print for Chrome extension.
  • It can help bridge compatibility gaps for older HP printers.
