HP OfficeJet Pro 9020
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The computer said there was an error when trying to set print preferences, so I removed the printer in HP Smart. After trying to re-add the printer, Windows is reporting 'driver is unavailable'.

I have run the troubleshooter and the HP Print and Scan Doctor but still have the same error. The printer is working fine from another computer, so it is just a driver issue on this computer. Any ideas on what to try next?

Hello @98Michael ,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  1. only download: HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories
  2. Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)
  3. run file name: OJP9020_Full_WebPack_49.6.4502_1.exe (256.3 MB)
I recommend the USB installation first
  4. after the complete installation, without errors, and after a restart, the USB connection can be changed
Changing from a USB to a Wireless Connection

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
Andreas

Hi

Thanks for the response.

I have followed the instructions you have given, but there is no change. The printer is connected via ethernet and is detected straight away in the Install wizard you linked.

Windows provides a notification in the taskbar saying "Launch App", so part of the install is completing, however, the install wizard gets stuck on Installing Network Device and after around 5 minutes it says Unsuccessful Network Installation and on checking in Printers and Scanners it says Driver Is Unavailable.

Hi, let's try this one.

The HP software must be completely uninstalled and removed of the system.

First download only this complete package: "HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One EasyStart Printer Setup Software – Offline Use Only ", File name: HPEasyStart-12.1.03-OJP9020_49_6_4502_1_1_Full_Webpack.exe (328.1 MB) this takes some time 😉

Reminder: this software package is intended for offline installation (NO Internet), please note!

Then proceed as follows:

Check the system for

  • TuneUp`s
  • Optimization Tools
  • Cleanup Tools

disable them, better uninstall them. Next...

  1. Disconnect printer/scanner from computer- Disable WLAN and/or remove the USB or LAN cable.- Do not switch off the printer >> unplug the power cord from the socket!
  2. right-click Start, search for "control panel" and open "Programs and Features"
uninstall all HP printer software > via "Programs and Features"
  3. right-click Start, search for "control panel" and open "Devices and Printers"
In the "Devices and Printers" window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  4. Restart the PC
  5. Close all programs
  6. Change File-Explorer-Settings:View > Options > "Change folder and search options" > Tab "View"
    • enable > Show hidden files, folders and drives
    • uncheck > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    OK
  7. search for "HP [printer name]" and delete all this folders
  8. Empty the TEMP folders
    A) C:\Users\[Your user account]\AppData\Local\Temp\
    B) C:\Windows\Temp\
  9. system files cannot be deleted!
  10. Reconnect the printer to the power supply and switch it on (if this does not happen automatically)
  11. Please note: WLAN has to be deactivated!
  12. Restart the PC
  13. Close all programs
  14. Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads click on the EXE, see above.

Via USB, means wait until the installation asks to connect the printer/scanner.

Document error messages, even better is a screenshot and upload here.

The network configuration or the type of connection can be changed later.

Note:

Change the File Explorer settings again -

  • enable > Don`t show hidden files, folders or drives
  • click button > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    OK

Regards
Andreas

Hi,

Thanks for the file.

I have tried this and i end up in the same position. It finds the printer, installs the app for it, then says Driver Not Available.

Any other ideas?
