Hi Team
Please can you help me with an issue I have connecting two of my HP laptops to a HP Officejet printer? I am pretty tech-savvy and yesterday I spent 5 hours trying everything I could think of and following every bit of advice on the HP web sites, forums and support assistant to no avail.
Set-up: Notebook = HP Pavilion - 14-ce2503sa, Printer = HP Officejet 6950
Issue: I have 3 separate HP notebooks. All used to be able to print to this Officejet (6950) printer. 1 still works fine, however the other two won’t print. Error message received in windows 10 when trying to print: 'Error printing on HPF2F4F1 (HP OfficeJet 6950) The printer couldn’t print Microsoft Word (filename)'. Only thing I can think of that’s changed recently is the printer recently asked me to update it’s software (which I did) – my other HP notebook still work fine, but these two don’t. Also, I have a second printer in the house, a HP Officejet 3830 and all notebooks still print OK via wireless to this printer. As such I strongly suspect this is an issue with the 6950 printer itself, and something to do with the firmware update recently applied?
Things I have tried:
- Connecting the printer using USB – same issue as connecting wirelessly
- Using Printers & Scanners in Windows 10 and removing device for the printer in question and attempting to add a new device – tried this multiple times. Tried this via USB and wirelessly. Sometimes it finds the printer, but when added to the list, when hovering over this entry it shows Driver not Installed. Other times it finds a DIRECT – device or and ENVY device, even though I am in the UK.
- Tried using Control Panel View Devices & Printers and removed the device and tried re-adding from there. When I do this it finds the printer wirelessly and lets me enter the WPA code from the screen of the printer, but when I follow through the process I still end up with the same issue.
- Have removed all printer software from Control Panel multiple times.
- Rebooted laptop multiple times
- Rebooted printer multiple times – even tried the option of disconnecting the power supply with the device switched on, then pressing the power button for 15 seconds before printer automatically coming back on – no effect.
- Tried with USB cable connected and disconnected.
- Updated windows with all latest patches.
- Used HP support assistant to install software & driver updates.
- Installed driver HP OfficeJet 6950 All-in-One series Basic Driver - IT Professional Use only from HP site.
- Installed HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software from HP site.
- Installed HP OfficeJet 6950 All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories from HP site.
- Removed and re-installed HP Smart multiple times – both from Windows store and direct from HP site.
- Downloaded and installed HP Print & Scan Doctor from the HP site and ran through multiple times.
- Used the virtual agent and followed all instructions.
- Compared Printer Properties tabs with a good, working laptop – all looks the same (except for the wireless port the notebook is using).
- Ran the Windows printer troubleshooter multiple times – this just says there is an issue with a print job stuck in the queue (which it then removes), but the issue persists.
- I am sure there are other things I tried in my 5 hours of trying, but it got very late!
As you can see it’s not through lack of trying, but I am still stuck not being able to print from these 2 HP notebooks.
Please can you help?
Many thanks

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Really appreciate you trying all these steps on your own.
Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:
Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93
If the issue persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:
