When Printer Assistant tries to open I get these script error messages.  I've installed the patch recommended by HP but it still doesn't work.  I've seen that a few others have had the same problem.  Any ideas how to solve it?

Welcome to HP Support Community

I suggest you uninstall the printer driver software from root level and download the full feature software

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the computer and download the Full Feature Software from Here and follow the onscreen Instructions

Try printing and let me know how it goes

Hi, thanks for the suggested solution.  Unfortunately it hasn't worked and I'm still getting a script error.

Let's try these steps

  1. On your computer, click the Windows icon (), and then click Run.

  2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.

  3. Click File, and then click Export. The Export Registry File window opens.

  4. From the Save in: dropdown menu, select Desktop.

  5. In the File name: box, type backup.

  6. In the Save as type: dropdown menu, select Registration Files (*.reg).

  7. For Export range, select All, and then click Save.

NOTE: You can delete this file once the issue has been resolved.
  8. On your computer, click the Start icon (), click Accessories, and then click Notepad. A Notepad window opens.

  9. Copy the following text, and then paste it in Notepad.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.hta]

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.hta] "PerceivedType"="text" @="htafile" "Content Type"="application/hta"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.hta\PersistentHandler] @="{eec97550-47a9-11cf-b952-00aa0051fe20}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile] "EditFlags"=dword:00100000 @="HTML Application" "FriendlyTypeName"="@C:\\Windows\\System32\\mshta.exe,-6412"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\CLSID] @="{3050f4d8-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\DefaultIcon] @="C:\\Windows\\System32\\mshta.exe,1"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\Shell]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\Shell\Open]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htafile\Shell\Open\Command] @="C:\\Windows\\System32\\mshta.exe \"%1\" %*"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta\OpenWithList]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta\OpenWithProgids] "htafile"=hex(0):

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.hta\UserChoice] "Progid"="htafile"

  10. Save the text file on the Desktop as Fix_hta.reg, and then close Notepad.

  11. Double-click the Fix_hta.reg file that you just created on the Desktop.

  12. Click OK, and then click OK again.

  13. Open HP Printer Assistant.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion.  I'd already tried that solution and it didn't work but I tried it again just in case something had changed.  Same result - I'm still getting the same Scrip Error message and HP Printer Assistant isn't working.

Please uninstall the printer driver from root level once again as performed an SFC Scan

Follow the instructions in this Link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-o...

Next check for Windows update

Then reinstall the Full Feature Software again: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-4520-all-in-one-printer-series/5447920/mode...

If the issue persists perform the steps in the previous post to edit the Registry and let me know how it goes

Thank you

  2. Click Manage another accountAdministrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. Click Create a new account.
