Thank you again. Followed these instructions to the letter (have done this before) but same thing. I cannot print from the computer in any application. HP scan doctor finds no problems . I can scan fine from the laptop. I can check ink levels and It will print alignment pages and clean ink cartridges page all from the laptop.
I'm really trying it all without success. I repeat it prints lovely with every other device I have just not windows 10 laptop

They were hopeless as the printer was out of warranty and they wouldn't do anything other than suggest I take it to a third party to get it fixed. Nothing wrong with the printer as it printed lovely with other pcs and devices.

I have resolved the issue and thought I would let people know in the event anyone else was experiencing the same problem. I downloaded the driver software for the model up from mine - the hp envy 5540 and it works an absolute treat first time- wish I'd thought of that weeks ago. Simply marvellous.
