Hi @LareL,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP LaserJet 1020 printer software isn’t downloading to your Surface Pro 11. Let’s go through a few steps to identify and resolve the issue.

Check Compatibility

The HP LaserJet 1020 is an older model and does not have a dedicated driver for Windows 11.

It often works using the built-in HP LaserJet 1022 or Universal Print Driver (UPD) for Windows 11.

Verify Windows Updates

On your Surface Pro, go to Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.

Install any pending updates and restart the computer.

This ensures you have the latest print driver packages from Microsoft.

Use Windows Built-in Add Printer Option

Connect the printer to your Surface Pro using a USB cable.

Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device.

If Windows detects the printer, install it. If not, select Add manually → Add a local printer → Use an existing port (USB001).

When prompted for a driver, choose HP → HP LaserJet 1022 (or use the HP Universal Print Driver if available).

Download & Install HP Universal Print Driver (if needed)

Visit HP’s official support site from your Surface Pro.

Search for HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) for Windows 11 – PCL5/PCL6.

Download and install the UPD, then repeat Step 3 to manually add the printer and select the installed UPD as the driver.

Check USB Connection & Ports

Try a different USB port on your Surface Pro.

If you are using a USB hub or adapter, connect the printer directly to the device.

Use a known-good USB cable if possible.

Run Windows Troubleshooter

Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Printer → Run.

Follow on-screen instructions to detect and fix configuration issues.

Restart Print Spooler Service

Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.

Find Print Spooler, right-click it, select Restart.

Try printing again.

I hope this helps.
