The wifi on the 6500 is very unreliable, so I hoped that a firmware update would resolve the wifi issue.
Webservices doesn't work correctly, so I downloaded firmware CIP1FN1621AR to update my version CIP1FN1126AR.
Connected on wifi, the printer was found but the Update software showed Status "Not applicable".
I then connected the printer on USB and tried again, but with the same result: the printer was found (on USB001) but the Update software showed Status "Not applicable". The Update button stayed grayed out...

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
To Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
To reset the printer's network settings
1. Touch Network, touch Restore Network Defaults, and then select Yes. A message appears stating that the network defaults have been restored.
2. Touch Reports, and then select Print Network Configuration Page to print the network configuration page and verify that the network settings have been reset.
Let me know how this goes.

Hi Kumar0307.
The link you sent with the firmware was of a different Officejet, but I already downloaded the latest firmware CIP1FN1621AR for my Officejet 6500A.
I also tried all the different methods of updating printer firmware, but I get the status is 'not applicable' (grayed out) and with this message the Knowledge Base claims "you do not need the firmware update".
Maybe my firmware is too old to update directly to this version, and I need an intermediate firmware version?
In fact I really do need an update, because the wifi on the 6500A is really troublesome.
Configuring wifi using WPS always fails, even though he recognizes that the WPS button has been pushed...
All my other wifi devices are connecting fine to my router.
I succeeded in configuring wifi manually once and was able to print, but the next day the 6500A was no longer connected to the router (after been powered off for the night). I haven't been able to get the wifi configured since...

I apologize for the incorrect link in the above post.
This is the correct link for the latest firmware.
Restore the network settings : Go to Setup > Network > Restore Network Settings
Print a Network Configuration page: Go to Setup > Reports > Network Configuration page and check if the wireless radio is ON
Connect to the network and try again.
If the above steps did not resolve the issue, a factory reset on the printer might be required.
- The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
- I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
- In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage

Hi Kumar0307,
Restoring Network Settings enabled me to connect to my router, but only by manually typing the network key because it failed again via WPS!
I again tried to apply the firmware update via wifi, but got the same status message: not applicable...
So again my question: what do I need to update my firmware version from CIP1FN1126AR to the latest version CIP1FN1621AR?
I found a solution here:
but that seems rather invasive, and since it dates from 2016, HP should have created a far simpler solution by now, I presume...

- WPS method may fail if there are issues with the router/modem.
- Have you performed a factory reset on the printer for which the instructions were sent to you via private message?
- You may try the workaround mentioned in your previous post. However, it may or may not work. If the printer firmware is corrupt or damaged/incorrectly installed, the printer might not work as designed.
