I started using generic ink cartridges in my printer after my supply of HP cartridges ran out. All was well until I innocently did a printer firmware update. Now I have tried everything I can think of and read about to roll back the new firmware update (2020) so it will accept generic cartridges once again. I am looking for an original HP Officejet 6815e firmware file so I can downgrade the firmware. Thanks in advance.

Hi @WheeziinGeezer,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I would like to inform that HP printers, like the OfficeJet 6815e, are designed to work optimally with genuine HP ink cartridges. Using third-party or generic cartridges may lead to compatibility issues, especially after a firmware update designed to reinforce cartridge security and performance. I would request you to please follow the steps.

Try a Hard Reset

  • Power off the printer.
  • Disconnect power for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect and restart.
  • Remove and reseat both cartridges.
  • This sometimes clears temporary “Cartridge Problem” errors, but won’t bypass firmware restrictions.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges

  • If you need immediate printing, genuine HP cartridges will always work.
  • This is the only guaranteed option without firmware rollback.

Take care and have an amazing day!
