HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello!

I own a 7602 Smart Tank printer. When it's plugged in, and powered off (NOT SLEEP MODE), it will power on at 4:00 am. This printer is in my room, and it's like looking at my neighbor's flood light. I have to keep it unplugged to keep this from happening. How do I stop this? My parents are looking to buy the same printer so I want to make sure this doesn't happen to them. Is this a glitch? Any help would be greatly appreciated asap. They may be buying the printer within the next week (on sale). Thank you.

@ProfPieHunter, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

What you're experiencing with your HP Smart Tank 7602 printer powering on at 4:00 AM—despite being manually powered off—is understandably disruptive, especially when it's in a bedroom. This behavior is not normal and is not expected when the device is properly shut down.

Here are some steps and insights to help resolve the issue:

First, confirm it's actually shutting down

When you press the Power button, make sure the printer fully powers off—not just goes into Sleep Mode. The display and power light should go completely dark, and the fan/humming should stop.

If it only dims the display, then it's likely in Sleep Mode, which allows scheduled maintenance (like printhead servicing) or updates.

Steps to Prevent Automatic Power-On

Disable Web Services (if enabled):

  • Go to the printer Control Panel.
  • Tap the Settings icon > Web Services > Turn Off.
  • Web Services sometimes initiate update checks that can wake the printer.

Disable Firmware Auto-Update (if available):

  • In the HP Smart App: Open the printer > go to Advanced Settings (opens EWS).
  • Navigate to Printer Updates > Settings > Set to Notify only or Off if allowed.

Check for Scheduled Tasks:

  • Some Smart Tank models perform maintenance cycles (like nozzle checks or printhead prep) during off-hours. While these are usually silent, they may wake the printer.
  • Unfortunately, scheduled maintenance cannot be disabled, but it should not occur if the printer is fully powered off.

Ensure “Energy Save” Mode Isn’t Mistaken for Power-Off:

  • Some models enter a very low power state that can appear "off" but still respond to network or update triggers.
  • To fully power off: Press and hold the Power button for 3–5 seconds until all lights are off.

Recommendation

If this behavior continues even after following the above steps and with the printer truly powered off, it could indicate a firmware bug. In that case, I recommend:

Updating to the latest firmware from the HP website (if not already).

For Your Parents:

Let them know this is not typical behavior and can likely be avoided by ensuring the printer is truly powered off and not just asleep. If they plan to keep the printer in a bedroom, it’s a good idea to unplug it overnight, just in case.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
