HP Smart frustrations

I have always been very happy with my printer.  However, after getting a new computer I lost the old HP smart software and had to install the newer version.  I hate it and am so frustrated!  One of the big issues was in the old software I could do all my settings for the scan before the scan, not after.  One big example is scanning double-sided documents.  Before I could choose that, and after scanning one side I got the message to turn the document over to scan the other side, and it would automatically collate the pages.  I cannot find any way to do this now.

It appears from web searches that there is no way to get the old software back  Are there any other options?

The full driver provides the foundation on which other programs and printing software depend.

The driver includes HP Scan – HP Scan supports scanning / saving / printing your scan content.

Preparation

If you have not done so,

In addition to the HP Smart application,

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.

HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.

Make sure your VPN is switched Off when installing software.

When the full driver printer software is installed,

Find the printer software listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

The installation of the full printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.

The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools

HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.

Basic Instructions - Install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Preparation

• If the printer software is still / already installed, Uninstall the printer software  from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > Restart the computer and log in – Reference Uninstall HP printer software and drivers

After the printer software is uninstalled, check that the printer is not still lurking in Devices and Printers. 

 If the printer is listed, Right-Click on the printer and "Remove" > Restart the computer and sign in.

• If using VPN, shut it off to install software.  NOTE >> If you don’t know what this is, you are not using a VPN – ignore this part.

• Reminder:  If using USB cable between printer and computer, disconnect the cable before installing software.  Later... Connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation procedure).

• Observation:  It is possible (assuming your Wireless Network is stable) that using a Wireless connection to install the printer software might work better than using an Ethernet Connection.   Personal choice - the Wireless connection method is recommended when you face insurmountable issues installing the software.

Installation

• Download and Save the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start Software
• Open File Explorer
• Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
• Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator”
• After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Preparation > Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

This was partially helpful.  I reinstalled the full software which appeared to be successful.  At the end of the setting up windows it showed me the "HP Printer Assistant" page, which is exactly what I wanted in order to work with the computer. However, after I closed it I could not find it again.  A search through the "Program Files" I found the HPScan program, which is exactly what I wanted to do scans.  I put the shortcut on my desktop.  So how can I find the printer assistant again?

The "Printer Assistant" icon / shortcut on your Desktop is generally marked with a "printer icon" (as  shown in the illustration in my first post).

That said, and as long as the program executable has not somehow been "lost", the shortcut can be put back on your Desktop.

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Double-Left-Click on Printer >

Double-Left-Click on HP Printer Assistant to start the software

AND / OR

Right-Click on the HP Printer Assistant to create a Shortcut

The shortcut will complain and ask to put the shortcut on the Desktop > Confirm / say Yes

Tried that, but there is no icon for the Printer Assistant (with the HP logo).  The other 4 shown on your image are there.  I tried to "Add a Printer" from the "Devices and Printers" page of Control Panel, made sure it worked, set it as default and made sure it was working again, then removed the previous printer / icon.  BTW I have also restarted the computer throughout the process

If the executable is missing - evidences by the lack of the Printer Assistant access / shortcut,

The full driver printer software is not fully installed.

Reinstall the printer software.

Example

• Uninstall the printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features
• Restart the computer and log in
• Install a new copy of the full driver printer software
• Restart the computer and log in
