I updated my Mac from macOS Sonoma 14.1 to Sequoia 15.0 and now can no longer print to myWi-Fi-connected HP Color LaserJet M255dw printer
I had no problems printing to the printer BEFORE the update.
After the update to Sequoia 15.0, I can no longer print to my printer.
- The print queue shows the job is submitted but never finishes printing.
- The printer shows no sign of printing.
- When I power off the printer after trying to print, it shows a 49 Service Error code every time I try to print. (I do not see this error when I power off if I never tried printing from my Mac after a printer reboot.)
- I removed the printer from my Mac and tried to add it again.
- The printer no longer shows up in the Mac Add Printer.
- Interestingly, it does find another HP printer on my network (HP DeskJet Plus 4100 series)
- If I add the printer using the printer IP address, the printer is found, and it selects the Mac "Generic PostScript Printer" default driver. In other words, it does NOT find the HP driver. I still cannot print to the printer when added this way (using the default "HP Jetdirect - Socket" protocol.)
- Mac HP Smart App also does not find the printer, in fact the app goes blank (white screen); cannot go back to the previous screen. Only option is to manually quit the app.
Note: My printer has been on the latest firmware for several months now (version 20240321, released on Jun 3, 2024).
A fix/workaround would be appreciated.

Found the issue with non-HP software.
My computer had SentinelOne installed from a previous job. Apparently, Sequoia 15.0 release has broken some cybersecurity tools (https://techcrunch.com/2024/09/19/apples-new-macos-sequoia-update-is-breaking-some-cybersecurity-too...).
After removing SentinelOne (see https://www.sonicwall.com/support/knowledge-base/uninstalling-sentinelone-mac-agent-through-recovery...), everything works as before the Sequoia 15.0 update; i.e., the printer shows up when I add it to my Mac and I can print.
For those, that cannot unistall the software, you can try to follow the workaround mentioned before that worked for me.

Found a workaround that allows me to print.
Add Printer using IP.
Select Protocol "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP" and select the "Generic PostScript Printer" driver.
(The protocol auto-populated for me was "HP Jetdirect - Socket" -- this does not work)

I'm having a similar problem but I don't have Sentinel installed so I'm a bit stuck with that solution. When I went to the HP website to try and reinstall it isn't showing an option for MacOS 15, inly 14 and that doesn't seem to help.
I've also tried removing the HP Smart app and removing the printer but now previous poster said I can't see the printer to add, but I have the printer showing in the Smart app and can't see how to remover the printer from there!
I can also do the work around installing by IP address but it loses all the features that I use regularly so isn't ideal.
I'm having to break out my old old MacBook to print things off!

I have not found a solution either. I suspect HP needs to upgrade their HP Smart app to work with Sequoia. In the meantime, I can print, copy, and scan, just not using the HP app. To scan, go to Apple menu, System Settings, scroll down to Printers & Scanners, and click on the right arrow associated with the name of your wifi-connected printer. In the screen that pops up, click on Open Scanner at the top, set your scanning configurations, and then scan.

I had the same problem with my Deskjet 2600 series all-in-one after updating to OS Sequoia and iPadOS 18. What finally worked for me was deleting the printer from my Mac and then running HP Smart on my Android phone to set up my printer as a new device. After set up I just clicked on the box to allow the device to connect to other devices on the network. Voila, my printer and scanner work perfectly once again on my Mac and my iPad Pro. In fact I can finally print in colour from my iPad for the first time since iPadOS15!

I have the same issue, but mine started slightly earlier than upgrading to Sequoia: when the printer firmware updated early September. From what I understand, HPSmart needs System Extension enabled, which I cannot do.
I was able to add the printer with the IP address until, I think, Sequoia update. Now, even that doesn't work in system settings. It does work in HPSmart, surprisingly, but I can't go through HPSmart to print everything (it doesn't do word doc, for ex) and it's a massive pain anyway...
I do not have Sentinel installed.
I've tried everything, Mac Support, HP Support, no one could help...

Similar problems here since update to macOS 15.1.
Printer (OfficeJet Pro 8020e) could not be connected any more. I removed the printer and installed it again. That works, but only as a "Common PCL printer" or manually as DeskJet or LaserJet printer.
As a result, when printing, before every pinning job the OfficeJet print 2 pages with error messages. And when looking at the ink, it is not aware of the type of ink cartridges (original HP - Instant Ink), displays them all as black and only print in b/w.
I can't find any software / drivers addressing this.
At the moment the printer is useless to me.

Hi @Ninakadin
1. Please download and install HP Printer drivers for MacOS from the next link:
2. And go to System Preferences > Printers then Add the printer.
