It sounds like you are not following the instructions where you unplug the printer and hold the power button while rebooting up.

If the printer is already booted and you insert the stick then you get the menu you just mentioned. You need to access the pre-boot menu by holding the power button.

Thank you. It works!

Thanks so much! Actually we were following the first set of instructions which did not mention holding the power button in, however, you pointing this out allerted us to the fact we might’ve missed other valuable information by not reading to the end of this discussion. Sure enough, later you posted the button entry sequence needed to access the pre-boot menu. Even better, someone posted a video, which was very helpful!

Hubby (who has been doing all the button pushing since the printer is in our basement office, and I’m restricted to a walker post-foot surgery) says he followed all the instructions I relayed to him and the printer has been stuck at “verifying” for a good half hour. That doesn’t sound right so I’m reviewing the steps with him again, and will have him try once more. I’ll update the group once that’s done. Thanks, Everyone, for all your patience.

Well, that doesn't seem to be working. After being stuck at a screen that says "verifying" for more than a half hour, I had Hubby start all over. He followed all the steps (holding power button down, hitting the Home and Back buttons in the correct sequence, selecting Menu so he could select Drive Reflash) and after "installing" he gets a screen that says "verifying". Forever.

The firmware file is the only one on the USB stick.

Maybe we'll try putting the file on another USB stick, in case there's an issue with this one.  We'll keep everyone posted. Thanks again, all.

I would try the following:

1. disconnecting the ethernet or unplugging your router so the printer is completely disconnected from the internet. Then try the process again.

2. If that still doesn't work re-format the USB stick and put the file back on. Try the process again.

@Repiaratrooper, thank you so much for taking the time to post this.  I am shocked that HP has this issue out there and has not notified its customers.  Your fix worked for my 577dw.

I have followed instructions and am also having the continuous "Verifying" circle on the printer screen.  I have used different USB drives with a FAT format with 32bit allocation and also a FAT32 format with 32bit allocation.  Has anyone found a solution for the Verifying problem?

I had to completely turn off my router. Don't let the printer try to connect to the Internet

I have spent over two days trying everything to undo the harm done by the firmware update. I will be filing a small claims lawsuit in New York City against HP. Maybe then they will improve the quality of their products.
