HP Laserjet 1217 nfw MFP
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I want to reset my HP Laserjet 1217 nfw MFP to factory defaults because I had a firmware upgrade failure.

I found information on the forum to power on and hold the X cancel button and the Copy button simultaneously as one powers back on (after unplugging the power and reconnecting & with the USB cord detached), then wait for the display to read "PERMANENT STORAGE INIT". BUT this does not seem to work after several attempts. Another post suggested the X cancel button and the right arrow key button. This didn't work either. I don't have any software called "HP Device Toolbox" recommended by another post.

The display screen reads  No Strings in RO after the failed firmware update (>1 hr "programming" so I rebooted).  The setting and report buttons don't work in this situation.

How do I do a hard reset back to factory defaults so I can start over with a firmware update?

@familyjohnson, Welcome to HP Support Community!

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

Hope this helps!
