I bought a new printer, I assumed without trying that I would need tech-support. I looked up a number. It looked legitimate and I called. The person answering had me download something and was remotely in my computer. I’d became suspicious shut down my computer and hung up could speak fraud.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

It's easy to get lost when wandering around on the 'net.

One little dot, number, or letter out of place, and Poof!  You are in danger.

Unfortunately,

You were scammed.

Unfortunately, having let the rats into your computer compounded the problem of your giving them your private information.

If you gave the thieves your bank information, call you bank - ask whether it's possible to stop or reverse payment(s).

If you let the "agent" install software on your system, consider it suspect.

What?

It might be malware, it might be monitoring your activities, it might be anything at all.

Do not bother to call these people - assuming they take the call at all, they will try to scam you again and get more money and information from you.

If anything at all on that computer is available to prying eyes, consider that the thief saw it, copied it, has the information.  This includes pictures, files, private documents.

Change your passwords.

Shut off any kind of remote access that you opened.

Use your own security software to run a deep scan on your system.

Report the incident to the authorities.

Beware of Fake Sites

The "Real Deal"

123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site

https://123.hp.com/

The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.

There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.

If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to sell you software, threatens you, or wants access to your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!

Worth Noting

  • Our HP Community is a peer-to-peer user group.
  • We are not HP Technical Support -- We are not associated with HP Sales, Service, or Warranty.
  • Our request for assistance on your behalf does not guarantee HP will respond nor does our request influence the outcome.
  • The time frame (how long it takes) to receive a response from HP is not controlled by the Community.

Important

  • HP does not free-post HP Support numbers on the Internet.  Not.  Not in secret, not in chat, not in pop-ups, and not so a nice technician can call you back, sneak into your computer, and then tell you your computer is full of bugs.

  • Be wary of any posted messages in the Community containing phone or email links – these are likely scammers who mean you harm.

  • Please do not post any personal information in the Community.  We are a public resource.
