Mac Book
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I just installed my All In one ink jet 6978 printer on my new mac book and I keep getting a pop up message

“ProductImprovementStudy.hptask” will damage your computer.  I can't get hold of anyone at HP and Apple is telling me they can't help.

The solution is to download (and install) this package which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen...

It is NOT the same as the driver package, Easy Start, or Easy Admin other people are recommending.

If the link comes up blank, try right clicking and saving it. If you install this package and still have trouble, try uninstalling your printer and reinstalling by going through Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners.

Easy Admin did nothing. Easy Startup did nothing. 5.1 drivers did nothing. This worked for me!

If this solved your issue, please thumbs up and mark as solved!

Thank You - This worked - no more pop up's and the printer works!!!  Was fairly easy to do and I'm not much of a computer wizard!   Thanks

Will this work for other HP printers. I have an HP Envy 5640?

Typically, but try it in this order:

Use Easy Start (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-easy-start/7376041 - make sure your OS is correct) and see if your printer is supported. If not, move on to the next steps.

Uninstall your printer USING THIS METHOD ONLY (NOT EASY START, NOT EASY ADMIN): Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners. Then restart your computer.

Download (and install) this package (From HP FTP) which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen... If the link comes up blank, try right/control clicking and saving it.

The install takes a bit. Let it run, even if it seems like it stalled out! When it completes, restart.

Then reinstall your printer using: Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners, and use the default drivers. If drivers do not show up, download and install the 5.1 driver package from here: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US . Then restart your computer.

It is NOT the same as the driver package, Easy Start, or Easy Admin other people are recommending.

I spent  ages on the hp chat line with my hp 6960 and my mac with the same message, in the end they said it was a Apple problem

I contact them and with in 2 min the sent me this

Okay it looks like there is an issue with the software compatibility. To get rid of the pop up. You would have to un-install the software.
Here is the webpage from HP that does talk about this. Then wait until a fix is released by HP. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/MacOS-Catalina-not-compatible-with-Offi...

Not true @STEPHENTAL

Try this set/order I just updated in the last 10 minutes:

Use the HP Uninstaller: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02440673
If you still have a folder marked HP, delete it.

Then restart your computer.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen... If the link comes up blank, try right/control clicking and saving it. Or right/control click and copy link, and paste into browser bar. If you get the malware warning part-way through the installation, go to System Preferences>Security & Privacy where you can tick a box and unblock the HP option.

The install takes a bit. Let it run, even if it seems like it stalled out! When it completes, restart.
