HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g gives me an incorrect message saying a cartridge is empty and should be replaced.  The cartridge is actually a new, unsued HP cartridge I bought specifically for this situation.  I have tried all the Virtual Assistant steps--unplug and replug; hard reset; clean cartridge contacts; etc.  Nothing helps.  I know this is a common problem.  What's the fix besides buying a new printer?
