I’m writing to the support community as well as you to share my experience with an Apple representative at AppleCare just now. He did his best to assist me and we were not successful. He indicated that in the early days of offering Big Sur, the latest operating system, there were many calls re printing problems though that’s abated. I’ll keep trying for a solution for my 8600 Office Jet +. Hope someone in our user community will offer advice based on his/her success.

@WestCoastCoach, Welcome to HP Support Community!
I'd like to help!
Try updating mac and printer firmware
To update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
To update Mac, try these steps - How to update the software on your Mac
Uninstall HP Easy Start
- Click on Spotlight icon and type HP Uninstaller or by opening HP Easy Start.
- Click on Continue to uninstall the software.
- When prompted for Password, type in your system password
- You can also uninstall by opening HP Easy Start.
Download HP Easy Start and install the printer.
- Download the updated version of HP Easy Start and follow the on-screen to complete the installation.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution. Click the “Kudos/Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!

I have the same problem in a brand new 13" MBP that Catalina and then upgraded to Big Sur. I used https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Applications/HP_Easy_Start.app.zip 2.10.0.201112, from 11/12/2020, to be able to get all features like scan and fax features since Apple's default AirPrint driver was very limited. However, HP printer works via AirPrint. But its USB doesn't want to print, but can scan. We need better USB drivers! 😞
