Hi everyone,
I'm having trouble with my HP MFP M234D (8J9K4F) printer. It's a USB-only printer (no LAN or WiFi), but according to the product box and information online, it supports HP Smart – meaning I should be able to print remotely from my Android phone, as long as the printer and connected PC are turned on.
The PC is on, and I've successfully registered an HP Smart account via the Windows 10 HP Smart app. However, when I log in to my HP account, it says I have 0 printers, and I get the same message in the HP Smart Android app.
From the PC itself, I can print and manage the printer without any issues.
So far, I've tried the following:
Performed a factory reset on the printer multiple times (at least 3 times) using the advanced settings.
Re-added the printer through the HP Smart app on my PC and enabled all available options (such as advertising, etc.).
Uninstalled and reinstalled the HP Smart app on my PC.
Signed out and signed back in to my HP account.
Despite all this, my printer still doesn’t appear on my HP account online or in the mobile app. I’ve confirmed the printer has the latest firmware installed.
Is there anything else I can try to get the printer properly linked to my HP Smart account and accessible via mobile devices?
Thanks in advance!

Hi @A89,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Ensure Printer is On and Connected:
- Make sure that your HP MFP M234D printer is powered on and properly connected to your PC via USB.
HP Smart App Installation:
- Verify that the HP Smart app is installed correctly on your Windows 10 PC. You can download the latest version from the HP website.
HP Smart Account Setup:
- Ensure you have successfully signed in to your HP Smart account within the HP Smart app on your PC. This allows synchronization for remote printing.
Re-add Printer in HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app on your PC.
- Remove the current printer entry and attempt to add the printer again by following the on-screen instructions. This can often resolve detection issues.
Check USB Connection:
- Confirm that the USB cable is functioning correctly and is securely attached to both the printer and the PC.
PC and Printer Reboot:
- Restart both your PC and the printer to refresh their connection and settings.
Device Troubleshooting:
- On your PC, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners and ensure your HP MFP M234D is listed.
- If not detected, try adding it manually by selecting the Add a printer or scanner option.
Firewall and Security Software:
- Temporarily disable any firewall or security software on your PC that might be blocking the HP Smart app's communication with the printer.
Check for HP Smart App Updates:
- Ensure the HP Smart app on your phone and PC are updated to the latest versions, as updates can often fix connectivity issues.
Try HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Download and use HP Print and Scan Doctor, a free tool that can help diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
once again I removed all drivers for M234D, reinstalled drivers, HPsmart app. Even created new account, disabled firewall etc
Reconnected via USB couple of times, still printer is not appering on "My printers" on website but it is available on HP smart app on desktop.
I even tried on my Windows 11 laptop.
Are you sure M234D is supported for Print Anywhere?
Because Web services options are missing from toolbox...

Hi @A89,
Thank you for your detailed follow-up and for all the troubleshooting steps you've already taken. We truly appreciate the effort and patience you've shown.
To clarify, the HP MFP M234d (8J9K4F) is a USB-only printer, which means it does not have built-in networking capabilities such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet. While it is compatible with the HP Smart app on a desktop, it does not support HP Smart’s "Print Anywhere" or mobile access features that require an active internet connection through Web Services.
This is why:
The printer does not appear under “My Printers” on your HP account website.
The HP Smart mobile app cannot detect it.
Web Services options are not available in the toolbox/settings.
We understand this may be a bit misleading, especially since the packaging mentions HP Smart compatibility. What it specifically refers to is the ability to manage the printer locally through the HP Smart app on a Windows or macOS device when connected via USB.
If you’re looking for mobile printing capabilities in the future, we’d be happy to recommend models with Wi-Fi and Web Services support that are fully compatible with Print Anywhere and remote mobile access.
Please let us know how you’d like to proceed or if there’s anything else we can assist you with, we're here for you!
Warm regards,
Kuroi_Kenshi
