My settings when printing is defaulting to landscape instead  of staying on portrait. Also it seems the print is a lot smaller than it should be when it is to fit the page/

Hi @lilwop

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your printer doesn’t follow your settings—especially when it defaults to landscape and shrinks the content unexpectedly.

Let's walk through how to correct both the orientation and sizing so you can print normally in portrait with proper page fit.

Step 1: Set Portrait as the Default Print Orientation

On Windows:

Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences.

Go to the Layout or Finishing tab.

Set Orientation to Portrait.

Click Apply and then OK.

This will apply portrait as the default for all future prints.

Step 2: Ensure Documents Aren’t Overriding Settings

Even if the printer is set to Portrait, some programs may override it. Here's how to double-check in common applications:

In Microsoft Word / Office Apps:

Go to File > Print.

Make sure:

Orientation is set to Portrait.

Paper Size is correct (e.g., A4 or Letter).

Scale or Fit is set to “Fit to page” or “Normal size”, not “Multiple pages per sheet”.

In PDF Viewers (like Adobe Reader):

Choose File > Print.

Under Page Sizing & Handling, select:

Size > Fit or Actual Size.

Ensure Orientation is set to Portrait, not “Auto”.

Step 3: Prevent Scaling or Shrinking

Avoid options like:

“Shrink oversized pages”

“Multiple pages per sheet”

Instead, choose:

Fit to Printable Area or Actual Size

Step 4: Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver (if the issue persists)

Uninstall the printer from your PC.

Download the latest full feature software for your printer model from:

HP Printer Software and Drivers

Reinstall using the new driver and set the correct defaults during setup.

Let me know what printer model you’re using if you'd like steps tailored to that model. I’m here to make sure your prints come out exactly how you expect—clear, correctly oriented, and full-sized.
