Product: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and older

Is it possible to load letter paper in tray 1 and legal paper in tray 2 and print a pdf document that contains both sizes and have the printer shift back and forth from tray1 to tray2 as the paper size in the document changes without manual intervention?

I have done that with other HP machines, so yes it should be possible. Make sure your tray settings on the printer are correct and if you are printing  PDF you may want to click the 'select source based on document" option from Acrobat print options.
