Hi @mmaloney,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw periodically goes offline, there could be several potential causes for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to address the problem.
- Check the network connection: Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your network. Verify the Ethernet or wireless connection, and make sure the network cables are securely plugged in. If using a wireless connection, check if the printer is within range of the Wi-Fi signal.
- Restart the printer: Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, and wait for about 30 seconds. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can help reset the printer and establish a fresh network connection.
- Update firmware and drivers: Visit the HP support website (hp.com) and search for your printer model. Look for any available firmware updates or driver updates for your printer. Download and install them following the instructions provided.
- Verify network settings: Check the printer's IP address and network settings to ensure they are configured correctly. You can access the printer's embedded web server by entering its IP address in a web browser. From there, navigate to the network settings and ensure they match your network configuration.
- Firewall and antivirus software: Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software on your computer or network to check if they might be interfering with the printer's connection.
- Check for conflicting devices: Verify that there are no other devices on your network with conflicting IP addresses or network settings. Duplicate IP addresses can cause connectivity issues.
- Router settings: If possible, check your router settings to ensure there are no specific restrictions or settings that may be causing the printer to go offline intermittently. You may need to consult your router's user manual or contact your internet service provider for assistance.
- Reset network settings: As a last resort, you can perform a factory reset on the printer to clear any network settings and start fresh. However, note that this will erase any custom settings you have configured, and you'll need to set up the printer again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @mmaloney,
Thank you for your response,
To factory reset your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw printer, you can follow these steps.
- Turn on the printer and wait for it to become idle.
- On the printer's control panel, touch the "Setup" button. It may appear as a gear icon or have the word "Setup" written below it.
- Using the arrow keys or touchscreen, navigate to the "Service" or "Tools" menu.
- Select the "Restore Factory Defaults" or "Restore Defaults" option. The exact wording may vary slightly depending on your printer's firmware version.
- A warning message will appear on the screen, informing you that all customer-accessible settings will be reset. Confirm your decision to proceed with the factory reset.
- The printer will initiate the reset process, which may take a few minutes to complete. During this time, the printer may restart multiple times.
- Once the factory reset is finished, the printer will return to its initial setup state. You will need to set it up again, just like when you first bought it. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure basic settings such as language, region, date, and time.
Please note that a factory reset erases all custom settings and configurations, returning the printer to its original factory state. Make sure to back up any important settings or information before proceeding with the reset.
