This method is working absolutely spot on. Will not take more than 10 minutes to get the issue sorted. Thanks.

Download Unsuccessful Message

The printer update could not be downloaded.  Touch retry to start the download.

When I touch retry - same message comes up.

Only way I can get rid of message is to turn machine off and restart.

Can you help please.

Thank you for this, it seems to have worked.

I've put a comment on my original question for this and given you credit.

Once again thanks

I am French too with an Officejet 8020 and has exactly the same problem as yours: automatic update and update download failure message and no way to reset automatic update to NO automatic update ==> printer is always out of order unless you come and manually cancel the download which lanches a reboot of the printer and you can print... quickly until a new attempt of automatic download. HOW TO STOP this nightmare??? Please HP,  publish a fix!

I published a fix for this on page 4 of this forum.

It tells you how to get round the problem with a software download onto your PC. Please scroll back to find. It's under my name MartinA55

Hope it works for you - seems to have helped quite a few others already...

Hi Carol,

Got to https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/printers . Search for your printer model. Download the latest firmware update and install it using your machine. While installation, in one of the window, it will show you and ask you to select the printer that you own and then follow the wizard and it should work fine.

Thanks,

Gagan

Mine was doing the same. I got around it by connecting to the printer to my PC via USB and downloading the firmware update file from the HP website. Seems to have worked 🤞
