HP OfficeJet Pro 8710

I have done a fresh install of Windows 10 and installed the full suite of software for the
HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. Everything works perfectly, but on my old system I used to be notified when ink was low and given the option to print black and white only to bypass the message. I do not get any messages at all when I printer on my desktop. Instead I physically have to go to the printer and tell it to allow printing in b/w. I would like to do this from my desktop again. I have looked through all the settings of the latest version of the HP Printer Assistant but I cannot seem to find this option. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @cirillok,

I'd like to help!

Print only black for all your print jobs

If you do not want to change the print settings every time you print, you can change the default print settings to print with black ink only or grayscale for every print job. The steps vary by printer model and operating system.

NOTE:

You must have the full feature printer software installed on your computer to change this print setting. Go to the Frequently asked questions section for more information.

  1. On your computer, search Windows for Devices and Printers.

  2. Right-click your printer, and then select Printing Preferences from the drop-down list.

  3. Select your printer again, and then click the Paper/Quality or Features tab, depending on your software.

    • To print using only the black ink cartridge, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.

      • Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Black Ink Only.

      • Click the Black & White button.

        NOTE:

To use even less black ink at a lower quality, select the Draft quality setting when available.

    • To print high quality black & white documents or photos, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.

      • Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Print in Grayscale or High Quality Grayscale.

      • Click Print in Grayscale, and then select High Quality Grayscale.

        NOTE:

The printer uses a mix of black and color inks to produce a high quality black printout.

  4. Click OK to complete the change.

    NOTE:

When you want to print in color again, open the Printer Preferences window, and then select Color or turn off the black ink only or grayscale setting.

I'm afraid this doesn't answer my question. I know how to manually set for b/w printing. What I am asking is how do I get the notification window to pop up on my desktop and notify me of the same error message that is appearing on the printer's screen? On my old system (same exact printer), the HP software would present a notification on the desktop stating that the print is halted due to lack of color ink (and other messages) and I was able to allow the print job to continue by choosing an option through the software. As of now, I do not get any notification from any HP software. The Windows print manager is the only software that appears showing status of print job. But of course, it just say waiting for printer and then I have to go to the printer to read the message and make an option.

Follow the instructions to enable the printer notifications -

  1. Open the Devices and Printers folder, right-click the HP printer, and then select Properties.

  2. Click the Device Settings tab.

  3. In the Installable Options section, set Printer Status Notification to either Enable or Disable.

  4. Click OK.

Figure : Enable or disable Printer Status Notifications

The following conditions describe the possible situations that can enable or disable the Printer Status Notification setting in the driver's Device Settings properties.

Hope this helps!
