My printer has decided, on its own, to make "two-sided" its default setting. I have to remember to change the setting to one-sided every single time (which is annoying). I have been unable to figure out how to re-set the default position to one-sided when the print dialogue window opens. Thank you for any guidance.

Thank you very much.

The model is a Color Laser Jet Pro M254dw.

Works great...but somewhere in the software it own't let me have the default setting sit at one-sided, so I can choose to change to two-sided when I need to...but otherwise default to one-sided.

My printer keeps defaulting to two-sided printing and I want it to default to one-sided printing. How do I fix this? I keep selecting one-side and it keeps defaulting back to two-sided. HP Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M281fdw

Hi @mpowell19,

Thank you for the response.

Try these steps:

Open Print Dialog Box:

  • Open a document in your desired application (e.g., Microsoft Word).
  • Click on File > Print to open the print dialog box.

Select Print Preferences:

  • Look for an option like Properties or Preferences next to the selected printer.

Change Print Settings:

  • In the print preferences window, find the Print Sides or Duplex option.
  • Select 1-sided or Single-sided printing.

Set as Default:

  • If there's an option to set these preferences as default, select it.

Save Settings:

  • Click OK or Apply to save your changes, and then Print to proceed.

Adjusting Print Settings Through Printer Control Panel

Access Printer Menu:

  • On your printer's control panel, navigate to Settings or Menu.
  • Look for Print Setup or Print Preferences.

Modify Duplex Settings:

  • Locate the option for Duplex or Two-Sided Printing.
  • Change the setting to Off or 1-sided.

Save and Confirm:

  • Save your changes and exit the menu.

I hope this helps.

I greatly appreciate all of this information and the time you took to share it.
None of it happened the way you listed it.
I opened a document in MS Word and, sure enough, it was showing "Two-sided" as "on."
At the top of the print dialog box I clicked on the printer and then went to "Printer and Scanner Settings." The Mac's Settings application opened to the Printers/Scanners section. The only options given were to set the color options; defaulting to B/W (correct).
When I went back to the print dialogue window, now where the printer had been it showed the "settings" option. I clicked on that and chose the printer.
It then took two or three minutes to "set up" the printer.
Now it thinks I have two identical printers. The good news is that when I quit Word and then reopened it and went to print the document, it has defaulted to one-sided. Apparently it returned to original defaults.
The result is achieved but the settings app now thinks I have two printers of the same model.

Log into the embedded web server and check the printer defaults. Most HP printers can be set in hardware to always duplex. Something else for you to check.
