HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

HpSmart says to Add Printer and everything I try to do so doesn't add it to HpSmart.  When I go to the Hp website, it shows the printer correctly and I can even print and scan from it from the Hp website, but not from HpSmart.  How can I fix this?

Hi @johntoml

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is correctly recognized on HP’s website but isn’t appearing in HP Smart, which can be frustrating. Here are some steps to troubleshoot:

1. Restart Everything

  • Turn off your printer, computer, and router.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then turn them back on.

2. Ensure HP Smart is Up to Date

  • Open Microsoft Store and check for updates to HP Smart.
  • If an update is available, install it and restart the app.

3. Reinstall HP Smart

  • Uninstall HP Smart from your computer.
  • Restart your PC, then reinstall HP Smart from the Microsoft Store.

4. Add the Printer Manually

  • Open HP Smart and click Add Printer.
  • If it doesn’t appear automatically, select Enter IP Address Manually.
  • Find your printer’s IP address by printing a Network Configuration Page from the printer settings.

5. Reset Printer Network Settings

  • On the printer, go to Setup > Network Setup > Restore Network Defaults.
  • Restart the printer and try adding it again.

If the printer still won’t show up in HP Smart, let me know what happens at each step, and we’ll dig deeper!
