Hello HP Community,

I recently moved from Saudi Arabia to the UK. My HP DeskJet printer was originally purchased and configured in Saudi Arabia, where it uses HP 653 ink cartridges. Unfortunately, HP 653 ink is not available in the UK, and I’m unable to find compatible cartridges locally.

Could you please advise what the correct approach is in this case?

  • Do I need to reset or change the printer region to the UK to use UK-compatible HP ink cartridges?

  • If yes, what is the process to perform this region reset?

Thank you for your guidance and support.

I wanted to close this thread by sharing my experience and outcome.

I contacted HP support to request a region change. It took several days just to arrange a call, and I received conflicting guidance from different agents. One agent advised me to purchase HP 305 Instant Ink cartridges, which I did, spending around £25. Later, another agent confirmed that the printer could not be region-reset, making that purchase unnecessary.

After that, the issue continued in the HP Community for more than 10 days without a clear resolution. At that point, it no longer made sense to wait. In 2026, when fully functional printers are easily available on eBay for £25–£30, waiting weeks to resolve a region lock is not practical.

I purchased a replacement printer on eBay (retail price ~£110) for £25. It works perfectly, is under warranty, and I was able to update the firmware without any issues. I have since disposed of the old printer.

This experience was frustrating mainly due to slow response times, inconsistent information, and a process that does not align with today’s consumer expectations. I hope this feedback helps highlight areas where the support and community workflow could be improved.

Thanks to the community members who tried to help.

Hi @nomad3240,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you. Please note that HP Printers use different ink cartridges in different region and to use the ink cartridges sold in the current region, we need to change the region settings on the printer.

I request you to please get back to me with the following information, so that I can help you change the region settings on the printer.

Do you still have the ink cartridges for both regions

Do you have a printer USB cable?

Which OS is on the PC? Is it Windows or Mac?

Do you have the printer's full feature software and drivers installed on your PC?

Hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @nomad3240,

Thank you for getting back and letting me know.

Step 2:

1) Launch the printer software from the desktop icon or, from the Start menu, click Start, All Programs, HP, the Product Name, and then the Product Name again.

2) Double-click the Estimated Ink Levels icon in the printer software. The Estimated Ink Levels window opens.

3) Press and hold the CTRL and SHIFT keys, and then right-click anywhere in the Estimated Ink Levels window, except for a button. The Set New Region window opens.

4) If the Set New Region window fails to open, right-click to the right and left of the Estimated Ink Levels window.

5) Take a screenshot of the screen and send it to me in private, not in public.

Hi @nomad3240,

Thank you for getting back to me and for confirming that you have reached the support team.

Could you please let me know whether you have already tried performing a regional reset before, or if this is your first time attempting it? A regional reset can typically be performed only once successfully. If it fails or is attempted again later, you may need to replace the cartridges to proceed.

Please share the details so I can guide you correctly with the next steps.

Let me know

Hello Vikram,

This was my first time requesting a region change.

HP Support has confirmed that my printer model cannot be regionalized for the UK, as it is designed to work only in the Asia / Middle East region. The only available option is to purchase a new HP printer in the UK.

The support representative’s name was Daniel (though I believe this may have been a convenience name, as he sounded Filipino).

Rohit

Hi @nomad3240,

Thank you for getting back and explaining the issue clearly. I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re experiencing.

For this model, we can proceed with a regional reset since the UK region cartridges are available. Before we generate the reset code, I kindly request you to please perform one more clean driver reinstall:

• Uninstall the printer driver completely from the PC
• Restart the computer
• Connect the printer using a USB cable
• Download and install the latest driver from the HP support site
• Open the HP software and try the steps again to reach the code screen

While performing the regional reset, please make sure you are using the old region cartridge in the printer. When the reset screen appears, share the image in private with us so I can review it and provide the correct code and further guidance.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Try and keep me posted

Hello Vikram,

I’m not sure how to send a private message on the HP Community. I tried sharing the image publicly, but it looks like the post was removed/banned.

I’ve seen references that private messaging should be available via the user profile, however I don’t see any option to send a private message from your profile on my end.

Could you please guide me on how I can share the required image with you privately, or let me know the correct way to proceed?

Thank you for your help.
