I found the installation of my laser jet very complicated.
Having just installed my laserjet M140w, which is working fine. Is it possible to remove the hp smart app and, if so, will I still be able to use the print, scan and copy features? The app seems to impose unwanted restrictions. I don't see why I should have an account, not be able to use compatible cartridges etc

There are two models in this series -- the differences are significant in how you use the product.
For example, the "we" model requires not just "HP" ink but "new, genuine" HP ink / toner.
There are other differences, as well, though they are not important if you do not have the "we" model.
Start - Answer
If you have installed the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software, then you can forego using HP Smart.
If you have installed the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software, then must you delete the HP Smart application? No - the app is tiny and can stay on the system. Yes, if you have printer software installed and / or other means to completing tasks with your printer, HP Smart can be uninstalled. Choice.

HP Universal Scan Software
The full driver printer software includes many but not all of the features found in HP Smart.
The full driver printer software and the Universal Scan Software include features not found in HP Smart.
The full driver printer software (and optionally, the Universal Scan Software) support installing and using additional scan and print software and apps. HP Smart does not automatically add support for other apps or printer software.
Copy is a function of the printer -- "Apps" other than HP Smart do not necessarily support additional "Copy" functions. HP Smart Mobile might support using your supported mobile device camera to scan / copy content.
Reminders
HP Smart is not the mechanism preventing you from using non-HP chipped cartridges.
The requirement to use HP Chipped ink is built into the printer's firmware.
HP Smart includes features that require that you sign into the application using your HP Account.
The application also supports mobile Share features and saving to Cloud Storage.

Printer Software
If you have not yet done so, install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.
HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts. The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.
NOTES:
HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.
The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it. If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver.
No Sign-in required to use full driver printer software.
Reinstalling?
- Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
- If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
- Restart the computer and log in.
- If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

In general, the web pack should load -
Download package > Save > Right-Click on the installation Package > Run as Administrator
If / When asked, opt for the Full Driver / Full Software to be installed.
Using USB? (Re)Connect when instructed to do so.
After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

HP Universal Scan - Full Feature Software and Driver
If asked, opt for the Full Driver to be installed.

- HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model
- When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut

NOTES:

- Read FAQ - including - What are the requirements to set up a printer using the HP Smart app?
- If using VPN >>Disconnect from Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection before downloading.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during the setup.

- HP Smart requires that you sign into the application using your HP Account credentials.
- When working through a Browser to access HP Smart, be sure you have Cookies enabled. If cookies are enabled and you are having trouble, clear Cache and Cookies. And / Or … Try a different Browser – assign that Browser as the Default. (Note: Chrome not working? Use / Assign a different default Browser.)
- Where possible, HP Smart benefits (likes) having the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software installed. For example, full driver provides access to Shortcuts and Printing Preferences.
- “Share” to email – Before using Share, add your sender email address to the standard Windows Mail application (not New Outlook).
- Document includes the HP Smart application download links for Windows and Mobile devices, plus an FAQ section to assist with questions / issues.
