HP Envy 6155e All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

It is so unbelievably stupid that it's so hard to change the name of our printers.   WHY ISN'T THIS OPTION EVERYWHERE?????

It should be in the app and online and even on the printer - but it's NOWHERE.

Obviously, OBVIOUSLY it never makes sense to name the printer the name of model number - who cares?   Printers have to be named for their location - ALWAYS.    What if you have more than one printer on the network?   What if you have multiple printers on your subscription ink plan?

Does anyone have the answer??? And please don't say just click on settings and click RENAME PRINTER - that's obviously not there but HP keeps telling me it is.

I don’t need to change it for printing from my Mac – I need the printer name on the printer itself to change – so it is accurately reflected on the ink subscriptions I pay for, and on my HP account when I login.

@Romeodawg, Thanks for the clarification — and I totally get the frustration. You're absolutely right: naming your printer something meaningful like its location should be easier, especially when managing multiple devices and Instant Ink subscriptions.

Right now, the name displayed on the printer itself and in your HP account is usually tied to how the printer was set up through HP Smart. Unfortunately, there's no direct option on the printer or in the HP Smart app/web portal to rename it like you would on your computer.

Here’s a workaround that might help:

Sign in to your HP Smart account at hp.smart.com.

Go to My Printers > Select your printer > click the gear/settings icon.

If renaming is supported for your model, you might see an option to change the name — but this varies, and HP is still working to improve this feature across all models.

If you don’t see the option, I recommend removing the printer from your account and re-adding it with a custom name during setup.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
