IF I power off the printer and power it back on AND I load a document in the ADF, then I can scan to email ONE TIME only.

Subsequent attempts (without power cycle) cause the printer to go into a loop with "connecting" on the display just below the rotating circle in blue.  This eventually times out and I am returned to the home page.

@DaveCalle

I would guess that the printer is losing connection and restarting the printer temporarily resets / establishes the connection between the printer and the network.

Some Ideas...

This might be a direct failure of web services to remain connected or it might be related to the manner in which the printer is connected to your network.

Web Services is either on or off - and to the extent that you can control it is limited (almost non-existent) beyond starting and stopping the service.  You do need a solid network connection provided via the router (to direct and control your network traffic) and to the Internet (controlled and provided by your ISP).

The printer supports Ethernet connection between the printer and your ISP (usually managed by your router that controls the access to the "outside" world).  Ethernet is usually the most reliable and most stable option.

If the printer is connected via Ethernet to your network and still loses connection, it might be beneficial to assign the printer its own IP address to prevent accidental interference from other devices in your network.  For example, once the printer connects to the router (network), all is fine - until another device comes along and "steals" the IP address.  Assigning devices separate IP addresses can prevent address theft between network devices.

If there are connection issues that the router can detect, you might find information in the router logs.

Consider trying the HP Smart App (information later in this message).  Although the application does not work from the printer control panel, it is supported from other platforms - for example, iOS and Windows 10.

Other bits...

Although not as likely, it might be a problem in your email profile - these do not usually break, though it might be possible that the service provided by your email service is spotty or you need to check your smtp setting.

Settings, including those to set / adjust / test your email profile, the printer connection, and web services are available using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
