Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer has been fine for years. No issues, until I decided to do an update because I got confused while scanning something. The update failed (I can't remember the error at this point) so I tried to reinstall. I've tried HP Print and Scan Doctor and HP Smart to no avail.

One error message I can recall somewhere along the way is "We're sorry, we don't support this device or operating system." Which is BS because it worked fine previously. I have a Windows 10 Home laptop.

Here is where I am stuck:

hp smart.JPG

1. No page prints out.

2. When I press the ePrint button, it loads for a few seconds "Connecting..." before returning to the home screen. Does nothing.

3. When I click the "trouble locating..." link it suggests I find the email address. I found "Display Email Address" in Web Services Settings. That also does not load. It says "Connecting..." and stays there forever.

4. HP ePrint is "On"

5. "Print Info Page" works fine. "No problems found"

6. My VPN is turned off.

7. Wireless details show excellent signal strength and the correct network name.

I cannot connect the printer directly to my laptop because it does not have the right port. I also don't have a CD drive. (I believe I recall using a CD years ago on my previous laptop when I first installed the printer)

Now what??

The printer software is available for your printer.

Use the HP Easy Start Software wrapper to find and install the Full Driver for your printer.

Side Note:  ePrint is a completely different option and is not related to installing the printer software.

See References / Resources (scroll down) for information on ePrint

Check / Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software

The full driver provides the foundation on which other programs and printing software depend.

Preparation - Install Full Driver Printer Software

If you have not done so,

In addition to the HP Smart application,

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.

HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.

Printer Software Check

Notes

If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

The installation of the printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.

The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools

HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.

Next...

Printer software not installed - OR - (still) installed but not working?

NOTE:  If the printer software shows installed but is not working as expected,

Uninstall the printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

What if?

If software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and is “still hanging around” after you uninstall / Restart...

Microsoft:  Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

OR

Revo Uninstaller (Free version)

then

Restart the computer and log in

Reminder:  If using USB, disconnect the USB printer cable between the printer and the computer before installing software.  (Re)Connect the USB cable when instructed to do so near the end of the installation procedure.

Install a fresh copy of the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Restart the computer and log in

Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • When asked, Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
  2. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
  3. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
  4. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
  5. Full driver includes print and scan functions supported by your printer and provides the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.

What about Scanning?

HP Scan is part of the full driver printer software.

First, when I checked Programs & Features, it appears everything was already installed. I uninstalled each anyway, as recommended, rebooted and went through the steps prescribed to install in full. Eventually I ended up with the following error message:

Synergy23_0-1637005407891.png

When I click Printers & Scanners, as instructed, there is no option to "Add Device" but it does say Driver is unavailable (which makes sense since the installation failed).

Synergy23_1-1637005481215.png

When I open the freshly "installed" HP Envy app it lists add new printer, despite the previous steps detecting my printer. I link by adding wirelessly via the IP displayed on printer. It goes through HP device setup and then suggests I download something else:

and ends up here again:

Synergy23_2-1637005990611.png

Stuck again...

I appreciate the help.

No idea...

Perhaps the printer is not fully connecting to the network.

The printer might not be able to connect (or stay connected) if the printer cannot connect to the 2.4GHz band on your router.  This type of issue might occur if you are running a dual band / frequency network.  You did not say this is the case - ignore the suggestion if it does not apply to your situation.

There might be confusion if you are meaning to use regular Wireless but you also have Wi-Fi Direct toggled ON (printer display).  You cannot have both standard Wireless and Wi-Fi Direct running (ON) at the same time.  You did not say this is the case - ignore the suggestion if it does not apply to your situation.

================================================================

What else?

The connection type might need to be changed to TCP/IP

This might actually fix the problem and is worth a check / try...

Method - Create TCP IP port (InkJet Printer)

Find printer's IP /  IPv4 address

Print a Configuration Page

OR

Tap on the wireless icon on Printer Control / Display Panel

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer > Left-Click Printer Properties

Select Tab Ports  > Add Port

Select Standard TCP/IP Port > New Port and follow the wizard.
Use / Enter IP address for the printer.

Example - How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by greenturtle

Video:  Create & Use TCP IP port
“Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port within the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)”

 ================================================================

The printer might benefit from having a static IP address assigned.

Wireless Center > Section: Common Questions > Topic Connection Issues

Section: Improve Wireless communication by setting a manual (static) IP address

and

Some of the more common remedies grouped here:

Wireless Printing Center > Common Questions > Printer no longer works on network

================================================================

The printer Firmware might need to be updated.

The firmware is unlikely out of date simply because the last Firmware update, though certainly important, was last released (at this writing) in 2020.

================================================================

Less likely, more irritating, harder to track and fix:

The printer software - when uninstalled - might not have fully left the system.

Run the Microsoft or Revo uninstaller > Restart the computer and log in > Install the printer software

The printer software might be buried deep in the Windows file system - parts of the left over buried bits might corrupted or simply out of reach of the normal means to delete / add / install the printer.  This is less likely than other causes, it is certainly possible, and the solution requires that you reload Windows.  No one likes this - it almost always works.  Ignore it if you can't stand it.

I might have missed something obvious, of course.
