HP Recommended

After researching my "supply memory error" problem for my HP M254dw for three days, I was able to figure out that the the fix was to 1) reset the printer to allow firmware downgrades, 2) download the old firmware program to my computer, and 3) send it to the printer. Once the old firmware was reinstalled, the printer would once again communicate with off-brand HP compatible printer cartridges. The challenge I was having is that the 20200612 firmware program was readily available on the internet for PC and computers running windows. I could not find anywhere a download for Mac IOS environment...until I came across an obscure blog that gave a link to this page:

Scroll down to the area listing downloads for Mac OS X, select the second option under Firmware. This worked for me. I clicked the download, clicked on the .dmg file, an icon presented in finder to execute the printer update (downgrade), the pinter went through a reprogramming cycle, and voila, I was able to print again with my old cartridges. I created this post to help many others on this hp support site that asked the same question, and got no response. I hope this helps somebody and saves them valuable time.
