Hi @cheryl1230,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues installing your HP Officejet Pro 8600 E-All-In-One Printer and only the fax driver seems to be installing, there could be several reasons for this problem. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

  • Check Compatibility: Make sure that the printer is compatible with your operating system. Visit the official HP website and ensure that you're downloading the correct drivers for your version of Windows or macOS.
  • Driver Download: Download the complete driver package from the official HP website for your specific printer model. Sometimes, only downloading the basic driver can result in limited functionality.
  • Disconnect and Reconnect: Disconnect the printer from your computer. Then, reconnect it using a different USB port and make sure the connections are secure.
  • Manual Installation: If the driver installation doesn't start automatically, you can try manually running the installer. Locate the downloaded driver file, right-click on it, and select "Run as administrator."
  • Windows Update: Make sure your Windows operating system is up-to-date. Sometimes, missing updates can cause driver installation issues.
  • Antivirus/Firewall: Disable your antivirus software temporarily during the installation process, as it might be blocking certain files required for the installation.
  • Driver Cleanup: If you've attempted installation multiple times, there might be residual files causing conflicts. Uninstall any partially installed drivers, restart your computer, and try the installation again.
  • HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP provides a tool called "HP Print and Scan Doctor" that can automatically diagnose and resolve printer-related issues. Download and run this tool to see if it can detect and fix the problem.
  • Safe Mode: Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with driver installation. Try installing the driver in Safe Mode to rule out any such interference.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
