Hi @A1benavides

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here are the steps you can follow to resolve the duplex printing issue on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 when it prompts to load paper manually into Tray 1:

1. Verify Duplex Capability

  • Confirm that the printer model supports automatic duplex printing. The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 series includes models with and without duplex capability. Check the product specifications in the printer’s menu.

2. Check Printer Settings

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printing Preferences.
  • Ensure Duplex Printing (Automatic) is enabled. If only “Manual Duplex” is available, the printer will prompt you to load paper manually.

3. Windows Printing Preferences

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences.
  • Under the Finishing or Layout tab, select Print on Both Sides (Automatic).
  • Apply the changes.

4. Tray Configuration

  • Ensure that Tray 2 (main tray) is set as the default paper source.
  • Duplex printing requires paper loaded in Tray 2. If Tray 1 is set as default, the printer will prompt you to load paper manually.

5. Paper Type and Size

  • Duplex printing works only with supported paper sizes and types.
  • Verify that the paper loaded in Tray 2 matches the settings in the printer driver (e.g., A4, Letter).
  • Avoid using thick or specialty papers that may disable duplex.

6. Update Printer Driver

  • Ensure the latest driver is installed on Windows.
  • In Devices and Printers, check the driver version. If outdated, reinstall the full feature driver package.

7. Test Duplex Printing

  • Open a document in Word or PDF.
  • Select Print > Printer Properties.
  • Enable Print on Both Sides (Automatic).
  • Print a test document to confirm duplex functionality.

If after these steps the printer still prompts for manual loading, it indicates either the duplex unit is not enabled in the driver or the model variant does not support automatic duplex.
