Which printer? On some models the paper tray extends to accommodate legal paper which then causes the tray to stick out the front of the printer a couple of inches. There would be a blue lever inside the front cover of the paper tray that you press and then push the tray back to letter format. Best answer I can give based on the information provided in your post.
