Today I received this new printer and I installed it as proscribed including downloading the printer software from the HP website. However, it turns out that during installation HP deliberately sets the option menu on printer updates fixed to Auto. I'm not amused by this cause now HP decides for me whether I want to install updates. The obvious reason behind it is to prevent people from installing and using non-HP ink cartridges offered by other ink suppliers. HP uses the updates to do so, by (ab)using the HP chip in their own cartridge, preventing the printer to work without a HP cartridge. And as we all know, the "official" ink is expensive.

This is illegal because by doing so HP blocks the usage of valid cartridge alternatives offered by competitors. Is there a way to bypass this unauthorized restriction of choice in the menu?

HP does not block all 3rd party cartridges, they block cartridges that do not comply with the legal requirement to notify users that "NON HP" cartridges are installed. We sell tons of reman cartridges and yes our price is likely double other vendors, but our cartridges comply with legal requirements and work.

While I disagree with your assessment as to why firmware updates are turned on by default, you can turn them off in the embedded web server.

Your new OfficeJet Pro is pretty complex machine with a lot of features.  Enabling FW updates ensures that any fixes or added features get installed in a timely manner.

That being said here is how you can either turn them off completely or at least change it to get notified before they are installed.

Enter the printers IP address in your web browser of choice.  Then select Tools at the Top and Printer Updates on the left.

IronBadger, following your instructions i'm able to get to this menu. However, the choices displayed under Printer Update Options appear as dimmed text and they are inaccessible, with the one on top activated. So the situation remains as described in my initial post.

Odd..ok.  Guess I will need to locate an actual 9012 to see if its different than my 9020.  I was not aware that there was.  I tested the various security settings and none of them exhibit this same symptom.

Does the printer have access to the internet or is it on an isolated LAN or direct connected?

PC and printer are connected by a simpel wifi router which also takes care of the internet connection.

Installed firmware version is MANHTNPP1N001.1913G.00
