new HP pentium laptop wont add my older HP deskjet 1056 printer

new Hp pentium laptop with windows 10 s mode, wont add my older Hp deskjet 1056 all in one printer(about 5 yrs old). messages, offline or cant find printer. tried removing and re-adding the printer. it is a corded printer, i connected it to laptop with a usb cord. ive heard if im in safe mode i cant print but im affraid to take it off safe mode. do i need to download a driver for the printer or just purchase a new wireless printer?

Download and Save

HP Deskjet 1050/1050A All-in-One Printer series - J410 Full Feature Software and Driver 

If the printer software exists in Programs and Features - uninstall it and Restart the computer > Log in

Check to make sure your Windows Updates are current - and check that Windows is not waiting to Restart after having already installed recent Updates.

Make sure your Security Software is not blocking the installation, too.  This is  not at common as other issues - it can happen.

Printer Software – Blocked in Security Software

Check your Security Software to make sure the printer software is not being blocked.  Most Security software will allow you to make an exception for applications / software you want to use on your computer.

If you make changes to the security software setup, Restart your computer and log in.

Uninstall Existing Printer Software (Full Feature Software)

Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >

Find / Select > Uninstall the printer software

If software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and it “still hanging around” after you uninstall / Restart...

Microsoft:  Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

OR

Revo Uninstaller (Free version)

Installation – Full Feature Software

• If using USB, disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer before starting the installation.  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (toward the end of the installation procedure).

Basic Instructions

• Download the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start wrapper
• Open File Explorer
• Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
• Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator”
• If using Easy Start > When asked, opt for "Full Driver" (exact wording might vary).
• After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

What else?

The printer is certainly old enough to consider replacing it.

Things have improved a lot in nine years.

A newer printer supports newer printer software, newer print applications, too.

Worth thinking about...

Be sure to CHECK the features on any printer you might purchase.  Compare before you buy.

For example, if you want Borderless printing, be aware that many Deskjet printers do not support Borderless printing.
