@barbkk, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue with selecting the photo tray on your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer. I understand how important it is to have the correct tray selected for printing photos, and I'm here to assist you in resolving this matter.

Ensure the Photo Tray is Properly Inserted

Make sure the photo tray is correctly seated inside the input tray.

If you don't see the photo tray inside the input tray, remove the output tray, and then pull open the photo tray

Check for Paper in the Photo Tray

Ensure that photo paper is loaded into the photo tray.

If the photo tray is empty, the printer may not display it as an available option.

Select the Photo Tray in Print Settings

When printing from an application, go to the print settings.

Select the photo tray as the paper source.

Ensure that the paper size and type match the photo paper loaded in the tray.

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Restart the Printer

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Check if the photo tray is now selectable in the print settings.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
