@CWanamaker, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you’re having a frustrating time getting your HP DeskJet 4155e connected for setup. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you get your printer connected properly. Follow these step-by-step, and let me know if it helps or if we need to go a bit deeper.

Check Your Wi-Fi Connection

Ensure that your printer and your device (laptop, phone, etc.) are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Printers often won’t connect if they’re on different networks (e.g., 2.4GHz vs 5GHz).

Check the Wi-Fi signal strength to make sure it's strong enough for the printer to connect.

Reset Printer’s Network Settings

If there’s any prior network setting causing an issue, resetting it could help.

On the printer, press and hold the Wi-Fi button for about 5 seconds, until the Wi-Fi light flashes.

After this, the printer will reset its network settings, and you can try reconnecting.

Reboot Your Devices

Restart the printer, your computer, and your router. This simple step can often resolve many connectivity issues.

For the router, try turning it off for 10 seconds and then turning it back on.

Connect via HP Smart App (Recommended Method)

Open the HP Smart App on your smartphone or computer.

If the printer isn’t automatically discovered, tap Add Printer within the app.

The app should guide you through connecting the printer via Wi-Fi. If the printer shows up but doesn't connect:

Try restarting the HP Smart App.

Make sure the app is updated to the latest version.

Try re-running the setup process after a reset of your printer’s network settings.

Printer Control Panel

On the printer’s control panel, tap the Wi-Fi icon (this may look like a wireless signal symbol) to check for available networks.

Ensure you select your Wi-Fi network and enter the correct password. If the printer does not connect, double-check your Wi-Fi credentials.

Check the Router Settings

Disable MAC filtering: Some routers have MAC filtering, which could prevent the printer from connecting. You can temporarily disable it in the router settings or add your printer’s MAC address to the allowed list.

Ensure WPA2 encryption: Your router should use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. Older WPA or WEP settings could cause issues with newer devices.

Check the number of devices connected: Some routers have a limit on the number of devices that can be connected simultaneously. Try disconnecting some devices if you have many connected.

Use USB Setup (Alternative Method)

If the Wi-Fi connection still isn't working, you can try setting up the printer through a USB cable. This can help you get through the setup process.

Connect the printer to your computer via USB, and then run the HP Smart App or the setup software to complete the installation.

Once the setup is complete, you can disconnect the USB cable and switch the printer to Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
