Update:  From "Printers and Scanners" I have removed and re-added the printer:  Now I'm back to "Driver is unavailable"

HP Recommended

I have a "work around" which is not very user-friendly, but I'm printing again!

Following Shlomi's suggestions...

1.  I deleted everything "HP" related again:

  • Printers & Scanners: "remove".
  • Win-R: printui /s - everything HP.
  • Device Manager: HP printer.
  • re-ran the registry update
  • Deleted two directories:  W32X86 and x64 (I still have the original .old ones)

2.  Reinstalled the full driver software - this needed two attempts because it took a long time and said "failed", so I just retried.

3.  Got back to the state where submitting a test print said "Error" (not "driver is unavailable").

4.  In Printers and Scanners/select the printer/Manage/Printer Properties/Ports tab

Where it has WSD-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-etc. (long guid).  Add a standard TCP/IP port specifying the IPv4 IP address of the printer and ensure that the new (TCP/IP) port and not the WSD--- port is selected and "OK".

The printer now prints!

DISADVANTAGE: - if the IP address of the printer changes (power recycling or similar) the TCP/IP port address will have to be changed to the new value.

Maybe HP will find a "proper" solution soon?
