macOS 10.14 Mojave

I have a wireless printer but even when my MAC recognizes it, when I hit print, the print queue says printer is either offline or not connected. I fear I may not have it connected correctly. I DO have a USB cable connecting the back of the printer to the back of my MAC. should I not do that? Do I need to reboot my router? Do I need to reboot my MAC (just did that and have the same issue.)  thanks for any help.

I understand your concern. There is no printer driver available on the HP Support site for this model printer to work on macOS 10.14. This printer is not AirPrint compatible too. 

However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.

 

NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.

 

Just connecting the printer to the MAC will not help in the absence of drivers. However, you may check the below points:

 

Make sure the cable is directly connected between the MAC and the printer.

The use of a USB hub is not recommended. Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your MAC.

Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the MAC? Disable the same and check if that helps.

You may check this in System Information > Applications.

 

  • Check if the printer is getting recognized by your MAC:
  1. From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac.
  2. Click System Report.
  3. Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB.

USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus
