HP 6600 All in one
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

I have tried downloading the drivers and software for my HP 6600 All In One Printer for a few days now, but each time I try the download hangs and will not finish.  The download will get as far as 40MB and then just sit there.  I have tried using different browsers on different machines with the same result.  Even different OSes result in the same.

I am trying to download them as my system tells me the current install has been corrupted some how, so until I can get the new drivers/software my printer is out of action.

I have tried everything from "Turning it off and on again", to re-installing the OS.

Going through your post, I understand that you are having issues while installing the Officejet printer on your MAC. Let’s try to install the printer as described below:

  • Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
  • Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
  • Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
  • Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
  • Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
  • Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
  • Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.
  • Click the “Add button” (+).
  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
  • Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (By default “Airprint” would be selected)

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Good luck 🙂

While this helped and did solve the problem, which I appreciate.  The software and driver download issue is still a major problem, in-so-far-as, I cannot download them.  Also I found the drivers and software that I saved and this hangs after the printer has been added to the system stating " A critical error has occured, please restart the application.

So while I have managed a work around using your method and I can now print and scan, HP has some work to do so its customers can download and use the software and drivers for this printer.
