My HP Printer has been saying for the past year that it's paper tray needs to be closed, but it already is. I've tried doing firmware updates but not it is saying that someone else is trying to update it although I am the only one trying. I don't know what to do and I can't buy another printer at this time.

Hi @Sammy1023

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the  "Close paper tray" error and  "cannot update firmware"

What is the error your receiving when you try and update the firmware?

Let's try the below steps that could fix the issue.

  1. Open the input tray door, then pull it toward you to extend the paper tray.

Figure : Opening the input tray

    Image: Opening the input tray.
  2. Slide the paper width guides to their outermost position.

  3. Slide in the paper width guides in until they rest against the edges, then push the input tray forward until it clicks into place.

If the issue persists, I suggest you do a Hard Reset

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.

(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Try closing the tray.

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website with the printer on and connected to the computer,

go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads , and then identify your printer.

Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
