I followed the instructions given here:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Inkjet-Printing/No-Colour-Printing/td-p/6190507
The printer still can't print in color. When I try to access "preferences" I get this msg:
HP86F7C9 (HP ENVY 5540 series) Document Properties
Function address 0x27359e08 caused a protection fault. (exception code 0xe06d7363)
The application property sheet page(s) may not function properly.

I wanted to pass along a solution that worked for me. I have had this printer for a while and it has worked well. I recently purchased a new All-In-One Hp Pavilion running Win 10 Home 64-bit. When I started it up new, it automatically found the printer and installed the latest drivers. At this point it was only printing in B&W. What was intersting is that my previous PC was running Win 10 Pro 64-bit and printed color just fine. I used one of the HP help solutions on one of these posts about uninstalling the software and the drivers and decided to install the software off of the CD that came with the printer. That software works fine and in color. The version on my CD is 17.59.0.4119. The latest version from HP is 20.79.1.6594 and does not work for me. FYI.
