When I got a new update, I was no longer able to scan with my Officejet Pro 8610 but I could still print.  I ignored for awhile, but really need to be able to scan.  I have tried all suggestions.  Now that I have un installed it, I cannot re install and cannot even print.  It can detect the device, just not reinstall.  I would like to have it connect via wifi as this is my work laptop and the printer is connected via USB to my desktop.  Have tried lowing my firewalls, scan doctor, etc.  No luck.  Any advice?  I have spent several hours on this.

@mccrawford, Welcome to HP Support Community!

When a USB or Ethernet cable is connected to the printer, the printer cannot connect wirelessly. I'd suggest you disconnect it from the desktop and try to connect to your work PC first. Once the connection is successful, try connecting it via USB to your desktop PC.

Refer to the document Connect to a Wireless HP Printer for additional help.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
