HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Hello! I bought a new MacBook Pro last year (MacOS Hight Sierra 10.13.6) with no CD drive and I want to connect my older HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One Printer to it. I downloaded all the new software from the HP website. Do I still need to have/use the HP All-in-One CD in order to connect the printer to my computer? The printer works, but nothing prints out when I try to print. Thanks!

Thanks for replying!

Yes, that could be a possibility! Ink cartridges could have dried up as you're unable to make copies too. Try replacing the ink cartridges and see if that helps!

Refer to the document Missing, Faded, or Dull Colors for additional help if need be.

I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!

@tony1202, Welcome to HP Support Community!

No, CD is not required if you have downloaded the software from the website.

To be able to assist you better, I would like to know the following:

  • Are you able to make photocopies on the printer?
  • How is the printer connected to the computer?
  • Which application are you trying to print from?
  • Does the print preview look good?

Keep me posted.

Thank you so much for your help @tej1602 . I really appreciate it. To answer your questions:

  • Are you able to make photocopies on the printer? - No. The printer runs like it's working, but no ink is on the paper when it's done
  • How is the printer connected to the computer? - through USB and Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter (used for my MacBook Pro
  • Which application are you trying to print from? MS Word
  • Does the print preview look good? - Print Preview looks great

I just thought of something (and if it's true, I'll feel like an idiot, haha), but maybe the printer ink (black & white and color) dried up? It has been awhile.

Thanks again for your help!

That worked! I can't believe the cartridges dried up, but they did since it has been awhile since they were used. The new cartridges work great. Thanks again for all your help @tej1602, I really appreciate it. Have a great week and take care!

Glad to know 🙂

Next time if you'd want to leave the printer unused store the ink cartridges separately. Refer to the document HP Inkjet Supplies - Storing and Handling Ink Cartridges for help.

Cheers!
